Tips for Preventing Corrosion
Corrosion is caused by a variety of factors, including humidity, temperature changes, and exposure to the elements. Because of this, it can be difficult to control corrosion during and especially after a parts cleaning process. Corrosion Causes
Metal corrosion is caused by moisture and oxygen – leading to oxidation and eventually corrosion. For example, if your metal part spends too much time in water during its tumbling process (especially when the system is off), contact with water and air is increased and the part is at a risk for corrosion. So, as you finish your part it is important to stay mindful of both physical and chemical corrosion prevention tactics.
There are a few strategies to prevent corrosion during and a tumbling process.
- Use an appropriate compound in the tumbling process that contains a rust inhibitor. This will prevent oxidation during tumbling. Also, never use an acidic compound with ferrous metals.
- Don’t let the parts sit in the media after the process is complete. Remove the parts from the process immediately and rinse promptly.
- Dry the parts as soon as possible after rinsing. This can be done with forced air, hand drying, or tumbling in Corn Cob Grit.
- If drying is not feasible, a post-treatment with a rust inhibitor compound such as the Kramco 1510 Liquid Compound is recommended.
