How Isotropic Finishing Works
In the realm of surface finishing, there are a plethora of methods to choose from. From tumbling to blasting, Kramer Industries has the best solutions for finishing your next project. Isotropic finishing is a lesser-known method that could bring you the desired finishing results you’re looking to achieve.
What is Isotropic Finishing?
The process uses typical vibratory finishing equipment in conjunction with high-density, non-abrasive media. Isotropic produces a non-directional finish, reducing surface stress. While not always necessary, this method often uses a chemically accelerated vibratory process. Adding this chemistry to the vibratory process drastically reduces the time to finish.
Why Use Isotropic Finishing?
Parts that have been isotopically finished have an enhanced metal-to-metal contact pattern. Contact and surface stress in any one location is diffused over a much wider area. This process is also much faster and more efficient than traditional grinding.
Isotropic finishing is especially helpful for parts that operate in metal-to-metal applications, such as automotive equipment, gears, and bearings.
The Process:
Metal parts are placed into a vibratory machine with the non-abrasive, high-density media. Initial refinement incorporates cut chemistry, which reacts with part surfaces to produce a soft coating. As the parts tumble within the machine, the conversion coating is wiped off metal peaks by the media, exposing the unreacted metal. This coating removal lowers the peak levels.
Once the asperity of the surface is removed, a mild burnish chemistry is added to the machine to neutralize any residual coating – completing the final finish.
Advantages:
While isotropic finishing may sound like a complicated process, it could greatly benefit the final outcome of your metal part. The advantages of isotropic finishing include:
- Reduced surface stress
- Reduced friction
- Longer lifespan
- Reduction in lubrication temperature
- Increased heat transfer
- Mirror-like finish
